Professor Peter Howat is Director of Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer Control at Curtin University, and a Professor in the Tier One, National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) Research Group. He is also Co-Director of the WA Centre for Public Health, Co-Director of the WA Centre for Health Promotion Research, and Associate Director of the newly established Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA. He was previously Head of the Department of Health Promotion at Curtin University until 2005, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Healthy Aging until 2006, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in NDRI for several years.  In 2001 he was a visiting Research Scientist at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta USA, and prior to that was a visiting Professor at the University of Oregon, the University of Illinois, Rice University, and the University of Texas at Houston. He has also held appointments at the University of Illinois and the University of Toledo, USA. He completed his undergraduate studies at Canterbury University and Otago University in New Zealand, and his MSc and PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, USA.


Peter Howat has authored over 270 refereed journal articles, book chapters, refereed conference proceedings, and technical reports. He has 250+ conference presentations mostly at international and national level including several keynote addresses (e.g. at the World Conferences on Safety, and the International Union for Health Promotion and Education Conferences).  He has been principal or co-investigator on 77+ research grants and contracts totalling over several million dollars; and has supervised over 60 masters or PhD projects to completion. He is a reviewer for several scientific national and international journals (including the American Journal of Public Health), has served on the Editorial Boards of several journals, and is Australian Editor of The American Journal of Health Behavior, and a member of the Editorial Board of Promotion and Education: the International Journal of Health Promotion. He has also been a reviewer for several granting bodies such as the Medical Research Council (UK) and has served on the National Health & Medical Research Council Public Health Research and Development Committee's Research Committee, The WA Health Promotion Foundation Health Research Committee, and on the NZ Health Research Council Program Review Committee. In addition he has been a member of review teams for Schools / programs of several academic institutions.

 

He has conducted research in a variety of settings including: laboratory, school, worksite, tertiary institutions and community settings. These have incorporated qualitative and quantitative data collection, and behavioral and environmental approaches. His laboratory research has involved physiological and psychomotor testing. His field research has involved psychomotor testing, survey research, intervention formative research, and randomized control trials. A major focus of his recent research is on health promotion interventions in community settings. This work involves formative research along with the planning, implementation and evaluation of experimental programs (e.g. physical activity, nutrition; cancer prevention; social isolation/social support, road safety; alcohol, tobacco and other drugs). He also has substantial experience in public health advocacy and policy related practice and research.  He has served on numerous community groups in NZ, the USA and Australia and has been actively involved in many programs relevant to public health.
