Associate Professor Ray James

Former Project Coordinator, Mentally Healthy WA Project, CBRCC

MA (Education) (UCB) MPH (UCB) EdD (UCB)

Ray completed his graduate studies in education and public health at the University of California Berkeley in 1980 and worked in public health at the community health, regional, state and University level in NSW and WA. He also worked in Asia and South East Asia. He was one of the founding members of the Australian Health Promotion Association, the first managing editor of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia and the Chair of the National Public Health Partnership Task Group for Workforce Development in Health Promotion.

Ray's interest in health promotion included: workforce development, program development and evaluation, and community capacity building. Ray worked for the WA Health Promotion Services Branch between 1992-1995 and was the Director of Primary Health for the Bunbury Area Health Service between 1998 and 2002. He had a very good understanding of the role of allied health staff and health promotion officers in community health settings. His final position before retiring in 2008 was Project Manager for the Mentally Healthy WA Project.

In addition to managing numerous health promotion projects, research projects and meditation camps, Ray had extensive experience in facilitating strategic and business planning and assisted many organizations to clarify goals, objectives and performance indicators. His training was in qualitative research methods and he favoured non-obtrusive data collection when ever possible.

Ray brought a commitment to collaboration and capacity building to all of his work and will be missed.
